Yes. We are going to discuss donuts and what makes a donut great and plan my travel according to your donut recommendations. Sure, the world is probably about to explode and I may not make it to be 30 years old, but the most important thing happening this week is that we need to talk about what makes a donut great. We really need to take time out of our days to discuss just one freaking thing that doesn’t feel like it’s 500 million pounds on on our backs. I truly believe that we all need a break from the constant barrage of heavy news we are getting and therefore we are just going to take about sugary, frosting-covered, glazed, calorie-laden donuts. Because sometimes that’s what we need in our lives.
Anyway.
One of the things that has made me most proud in life is the numerous times that I’ve been told by complete strangers who follow my blog that every time they see a pink sprinkle donut, they think of me. Honestly, that is one of the greatest compliments I could ever dream of.

I’ve had this outfit planned out in my head for over a year. I’ve had a built in excuse for getting donuts and I have failed to get donuts. I truly did go through a period of losing myself and I am just going to blame that phase on why I never wore this outfit.
Anyway, let’s talk about what makes a donut great! First things first, are you a yeast or cake donut person? Choose wisely. I’m not saying which one is better, because they both have their merits, but you are typically in one or the other camp.
In my hometown of Wichita, Kansas, The Donut Whole makes a Homer J donut which is what I have in this post and is the only cake donut I like. Why do I love this donut so much? Because everything about it is right. The frosting isn’t too sweet, the sprinkles are the perfect ratio of donut to sprinkle (I could do an entire post alone on how much a under-sprinkled donut pisses me off) and it’s just happy. Oh and it also photographs beautifully which is, second to taste, is the most important thing a donut in 2017 can be.
Donuts are the trifecta of food. They give you Instagram content, there is an emoji for them so I don’t even have to type the word, no one is able to be sad while eating a donut and they allow an adult to indulge their love of sugar and sprinkles before 10 am. Truly, donuts are the real MVP for so many reasons.

But here’s the thing, I actually think that what kind of donut you like says a lot about you and the choices you make in life. I don’t have a solid philosophy behind this, but I’ve found the best people to like the best donuts. (In case you are wondering, yes, my friends and I have met up a lot over donuts.) Soooo because you all are the best people in the world, I want to know what makes a donut great in your opinion! What do you get? Also, please tell me the best donut you’ve ever had. I want to know, I’m currently planning my travel around donut recommendations, I kid you not.

This post speaks to me on a spiritual level. I LOVE DONUTS. Though, embarrassingly, I’m not sure whether or not I’m a cake or yeast donut lady. I think yeast…? Because the donuts I eat are not the density of cake. Haha. If you ever find yourself in SLC, you MUST go to Banbury Cross for their strawberry glazed donut. It will probably change your life. It’s the best donut I’ve ever had. My boyfriend is now obsessed with them too. Mmmm now I want one!

you are too cute, I had a donut the other day and it is indeed the most instagramable food ever lol. So cute and so yummy.

Fresh off the grill, or at least they make it seem that way, are Krispy Kreme Donuts. When they’re hot and glazed and frosted and you order 6 instead of the 1 one came in for. OK 2. Whoever goes to a donut store to get one donut is not a real donut lover. You have to either have 2 or buy 6 or a dozen to quality to be a donut lover. I probably follow under the yeast kind as being my favorite although my husbands are cake so when I try those I think to myself wow these are great too!. Yeast donuts, maple covered and creme filled chocolate covered. Those are my standard donut order. I actually had to look up the name of the Krispy Kreme store because its been way too long since I drove the 3-4 miles to get there and unashameably order & inhale within 5 minutes both of them. Looking up the name has nothing to do with my age or senility so lets not even go there. We have a nice little donut store within 5 minutes of walking distance. It used to be my absolutely have to have them every single week donut store until someone mentioned they’d seen the owner drop a donut, look around to see who was spying on them, pick the donut back up and place it in the case. That kinda made me stop eating them for a long time., like probably a month, or maybe 2 weeks. Who remembers. When I realized I had enough chemicals in my body to kill common floor bacteria I went back to eating them. I wanted some yesterday but I wasn’t willing to get up earlier than the sunrise at a chance to maybe get a bear claw which are what’s left on a Sunday Mothers Day morning. So now it’s Monday, it’s rainy outside and chill inside. I just ate a healthy breakfast for once and I want to walk down to the donut store. Thanks. You are a true friend indeed <3

Sprinkle cake donuts are my FAVORITE! I shouldn’t be telling this to anyone, but yesterday I had donuts….twice. Once from Doughnut Vault and once from Firecakes lol.You look great in this outfit 🙂 Happy Monday girlfriend!

Confession – I haven’t had a donut since probably high school (that would be like 10 + years). I like donuts, I just don’t eat them. One can become “shove as many in your face as fast as you can” so very quickly. Plus the hubs has an intense love of Krispy Kreme, so we have to stay away. But I love the donut sweater! Super cute, and the perfect thing to wear when eating donuts.

Ahhhhh I feel like an indecisive donut consumer in that I can’t choose between cake or yeast! I love them both equally, but if they were laid out in front of me I would choose by analyzing their visual softness and maybe even poke them to make sure they weren’t hard. If it’s not fresh, it’s not worth the calories. Also, cake donuts are hit or miss so yeast is definitely the safe bet for me. Also, I should be ashamed by this but I force my parents to bring my favorite cake donuts any time they visit and even though the sprinkles are a gooey mess when they arrive, I can’t think of anything that makes me happier.
Also, I want to make a prolific Wikipedia page for you and put this as your signature quote….

Good golly I love donuts! And I love both cake and yeast donuts, it just depends on where I’m getting them. But prolly I appreciate a good cake donut more than a yeast donut because I don’t like cream or fruit fillings. If I get a yeast donuts, it’s a classic glazed situation.
For cake donuts…
near Nashville – Ellie’s Old-Fashioned Doughnuts
Cincinnati- Holtman’s
near Pittsburgh – Mac’s Donuts (tiny spot in the ‘hood in a town called Aliquippa)
Bloomington, IN – Cresent Donut (super rude donut Nazis with good stuff)
For yeast donuts….
Look, a hot Krispy Kreme, singular is just really, really good. Like so yum. Don’t hate, appreciate.
LA – LA Donuts are wacky! They’re like Voodoo Doughnut (I’ve only been to the Austin one)

Do you remember donut day at our house. Yes, you always wanted a chocolate one with chocolate sprinkles in those days. See there were some things about your childhood that you must have fond memories about. i love you! Mom

Who doesn’t love donuts?! I’m not a big sweets person, as I mainly like to treat myself to cheese platters and pizza! But, once in awhile, I need a donut! You look so adorable in this outfit too.

Well gosh darn it, now I am hungry for donuts! That sprinkled one looks amazing! I like cake donuts now and then depending on the flavor, but I like my cream filled ones too!

Personally I’m more of a yeast donut fan! Although I really do enjoy a nice cake donut . When I have donuts I go for a yeast one first then a cake one …just being honest…ooh and I have to have milk to wash down the cake one! If you ever find yourself in Kalamazoo Michigan Sweetwater’s donut mill is the place to hit up. Their Apple fritters are amazing. And they have a plethora of different flavors and they are open 24/7!!

I love this post. I’m totally a cake doughnut person, preferably old fashioned cake doughnuts either plain or with just a bit of icing (icing > frosting). Bogart’s Doughnut Co in Minneapolis is my fav so far because there’s are so perfect that they don’t need all that extra topping stuff to make them amazing. There’s a place called Glam Doll Doughnuts here in Minneapolis too but it’s one of those sugar bomb trendy places that has like peanut butter + sriracha doughnuts and I just want my doughnut to be plain perfection.
Man, it’s been a while since I’ve had a doughnut and now I really want one. My old workplace had doughnut Fridays and I so miss that.

Oh yes, I’m with you! I have basically an entire label of donut related clothes and accessories on my blog because I’m everyone’s “donut friend.” Because I worked at a donut shop in college! I really don’t discriminate but blueberry cake is hard to beat for me. This is such a great shoot. and you’re right, that donut photographs so well!

I’m an “old fashioned” gal all the way. My favorites in Chicago are from Doughnut Vault. although Do Rite’s are close behind. I’ve only had Firecakes once and I thought they were good but super sweet (not that that’s a bad thing). Stan’s gets a lot of hype but they’re not my favorite. And Glazed and Infused is okay but I think they’re a little too bland for me.
I recently tried some from Mike’s Chicken & Donuts in Kenosha, WI and, even though I don’t love yeast donuts as much as old fashioned, these were quite good!

This whole post is amazing. My favorite is a chocolate long john. Eff cake donuts if you know what I’m saying. If you’re ever in Champaign, IL for some reason or another check out Pandamonium Donuts, it was started by my friend and they do crazy flavors.

I feel like I’ve definitely had outfits in mind for specific occasions/posts and end up sitting on them forever, so don’t feel bad because you did at least make it happen! I’m not sure I know the difference between a yeast doughnut and a cake – is that something a shop will typically note? I know there are a lot of crazy designer doughnuts these days, but the best I ever had was a cruller at a bakery in the center of my town which sadly burned down about 20 years ago.
Good luck on your doughnut pilgrimage! Give me a shout if you make it to the east coast!
